Literacy
Literacy is about dignity, independence and wholeness.
Being able to read and write gives people access to essential information, empowering them to make well-informed decisions and seek employment. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to read, write and hope in the abundant life that Jesus offers. However, statistics indicate that:
- 775 million people worldwide cannot read or write… That is one in five people.
- Two-thirds of the world’s non-literates are women.
- Three-quarters of the world’s non-literate live in 10 countries.
In 2013, UNESCO gave UBS and the national Bible Societies under its banner, consultative status with the United Nations agency. UNESCO’s recognition of UBS’ competence in literacy work paves the way for the Bible Societies to participate in the planning and execution of UNESCO’s literacy programmes.
These UBS literacy programmes are making a great impact on many lives and The Bible Society of Singapore contributes to help ongoing literacy programmes in our neighbouring countries.
